Clinical Findings In Rhinosinusitis: Symptoms, Signs And Imaging
Dr. H. Halis ÜNLÜ,a Dr. Kıvanç GÜNHANa
aKBB AD, Celal Bayar Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, MANİSA Sinusitis is almost always accompanied by concurrent nasal airway inflammation and preceded by rhinitis symptoms. Therefore the term rhinosinusitis describes this condition more accurately. Rhinosinusitis is a group of disorders characterized by inflammation of the mucosa of the nose and the paranasal sinuses. There is a general agreement that there is no single ethiological factor which alone fully explains or adequately accounts for the pathologic manifestations and clinical heterogenicity of rhinosinusitis. Latest consensus definitions for rhinosinusitis are summarized. Quantifiying the symptoms, endoscopic findings, and radiological data in extensive sinus disease is proposed. The advent of nasal endoscopy and computed tomography (CT) has reaffirmed the relationship between the ostiomeatal complex and chronic rhinosinusitis. Although CT findings have been used to develop a number of staging systems for rhinosinusitis with relative advantages and disadvantages, Lund-Mackay system has an overall usage in clinical practice. A review of the literature on symptoms and diagnosis of rhinosinusitis is presented. Keywords: Rhinosinusitis, symptom, endoscopy, CTTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2005, 1(3):5-14
