Choronic Suppurative Otitis Media

KBB Kliniği, SB Ankara Dışkapı Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, ANKARA Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is a chronic infection and inflammation of the middle ear and mastoid and manifests with otorrhea and hearing loss. CSOM usually results from recurrent acute otitis media and/or chronic otitis media with effusion, moreover tubal dysfunction, allergy, infection of nasopharynx and paranasal sinus causes predisposition to the CSOM.
Otorrhea and hearing loss are the most common presenting symptoms. In addition, sensation of blocked ear, tinnitus, dizziness and pain might be other complaints. The most commonly isolated microorganism is Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The other microorganism isolated from culture are coagulase negative staphylococcus, Esherichia coli, proteus, Bacteroides melaninogenicus, Bacteroides fragilis.
The aim of the therapy is eradicate of infection, prevent the development of complication, restoration of tympanic membrane and hearing. The purpose of medical treatment is to control the infection and eliminate aural discharge. Repair of tympanic membrane and correction of the hearing loss is usually achieved by surgical therapy.
