aKulak Burun Boğaz Hastalıkları AD, bOdyoloji BD, Gazi Üniversitesi, Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Balance is a mechanism that facilitates our orientation in the three dimensional space, thereby prevent falling down by regulating postural control. Information about our orientation in the space is transferred by proprioception, eyes and ocular muscles, and vestibular system. This incoming information is evaluated and modified by the central nervous system, and in turn extensor or flexor muscle groups are activated accordingly. Vertigo, a hallucination of motion, is a symptom of vestibular disorders. In this article, functional anatomy and physiology, and vestibular compensation mechanisms are reviewed. Keywords: Vertigo, dizziness, balance, vestibular physiology, vestibular compansation, vestibular rehabilitationTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2006, 2(49):1-7
