Laboratory Investigations In Management Of Epistaxis
Dr. Türkan PATIROĞLU,a Dr. Musa KARAKÜKCÜa
aPediatrik Hematoloji BD, Erciyes Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, KAYSERİ Epistaxis, or nosebleed, is a common complaint. Most nosebleeds are benign, self-limiting, and spontaneous. Also most cases need no medical treatment to control and stop the hemorrhage. In rare cases, however, massive nasal bleeds can lead to aspiration, hypotension, hypoxemia, or shock. Causative factors include firstly trauma than inflamations or infections, allergic rhinitis, anatomic abnormalities, neoplasms, medications, coagulopathies, and systemic causes of hypertension and atheresclerosis. So diagnosis and laboratory studies should be directed to the etiology. Before laboratory studies initial questioning and physical examination is proposed carefully. Laboratory studies are not needed for the healthy people with first-time or infrequent recurrences of anterior nosebleeds that can be easily controlled. Laboratory investigations, scanning methods, and consultation are also thought necessary in the management of severe or persistent bleeding. Keywords: Epistaxis; laboratories; diagnosisTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(10):53-56
