Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome Etiology And Risk Factors: Obesity And Other Risk Factors

Obesity, age, male sex, smoking, alcohol and sedative usage, facial anomalies, genetic factors are risk factors of OSAS. BMI greater (>25) than 25, neck circumference greater than 43 cm in men, 38 cm in women are leading risk factors OSAS. OSAS in seen twice more in male Population over 40 years old. Black race is at higher risk group. Hypothyroidism and acromegaly cause upper airways get narrow, decrease muscle tonus and so predispose OSAS. Micro and/or retrognatia, big tonsils,… and such anatomical pathologies, narrowing upper airways, cause OSAS in all age groups.
