Dr. Aylin BİCAN,a Dr. İbrahim Hakkı BORAa
aNöroloji AD, Uludağ Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, BURSA The first step in the treatment of obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSAS) is to determine wheather patients in need of treatment and than to determine which treatment is available for the patient. The treatment of patients with OSAS is evaluated mainly in two categories. It may be devided in to medical and surgical treatment. General treatment suggestions may be as follows: To secure the sleep regulation, to arrange the treatment of secondary diseases, to suggest a weight-loosing diet for fat patients to pay attention that patients must not sleep in back body position and to arrenge a medical therapy if nasal congestion is present. As alcohol and sedative drugs are the main factors which aggravates OSAS picture, it must be recomended that these must not be used. Although there have been some temporary response to drugs such as protriptyline, medroxyprogesterone, acetazolamide. The valid aggrement today is that drugs are not effective in the treatment of OSAS.Keywords: Medical therapy, protriptyline, weight-loosing dietTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(23):74-75
