Treatment Of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome: Oral Appliances
Dr. Ömer Afşın ÖZMENa
aKulak Burun Boğaz Hastalıkları AD, Uludağ Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, BURSA Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the gold standard treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), however adherence to CPAP treatment is low. Oral appliances provide an effective treatment option for patients with mild and moderate OSAS which is relatively easy to use. CPAP and surgical options should be considered first in patients with severe OSAS. Success rates between 50 to 80% are reported for mandibular advancement devices (MAD). The patients should go under a control polysomnography because the outcome of this treatment is unpredictable. Keywords: Sleep apnea, obstructive, orthodontic appliances, functional, mandibular advancementTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(23):81-85
