Treatment Of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome: Surgery Of Tongue Base
Dr. Kemal GÖRÜRa
aKulak Burun Boğaz AD, Mersin Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, MERSİN Obstructive sleep apnea is a clinical pathology, characterized intermittent upper airway collapse. This condition leads to increased upper airway resistance, hypopnea, and episodes of apnea during sleep. The collapse level of airway is at the level of soft palate in half of patients with OSAS and at the retro lingual level in the other half. Several surgical techniques have been described to manage OSAS. In patients with retrolingual airway collapse the success rate of uvulopalatopharygoplasty (UPPP) alone was low. Therefore, successful management of OSAS needs to a variety of surgical procedures to improve multiple levels of airway obstruction. In the present article, we reviewed several previously described tongue base surgical procedures in patients with OSAS.Keywords: OSAS, electrosurgery, surgery, oral, radiosurgeryTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(23):101-104
