Sjogren's Syndrome
Dr. Huri ÖZDOĞANa
aRomatoloji BD, İstanbul Üniversitesi Cerrahpaşa Tıp Fakültesi, İSTANBUL Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune disease of the exocrine glands with a prevalence of 0.5-5 %. Major complaints are dryness of eyes and oral mucosa, accompanied by intermittent or chronic swelling of parotid and salivary glands, therefore it is also named as 'sicca syndrome'. The dryness is secondary to the lymphocytic infiltration of the periepithelial tissue of the exocrine glands. In 30% of the cases there is an association with another autoimmune disease like rheumatoid arthritis, thyroiditis, primary biliary chirrosis (secondary SS). Generally the disease runs a slow and benign course. but in a minority of the cases there is a risk of developing a lymphoproliferative disease. The disease pattern is either glandular or extra-glandular. Artificial tear preparations, saliva stimulants are used as topical therapy. In patients with systemic involvement therapy with hydroxychloroquine, corticosteroids, IVIG and biologics are preferred. Keywords: Sjogren's syndrome, keratoconjunctivitis siccaTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(36):31-36
