Xerostomia
Dr. Yalçın ORAN,a Dr. Emin KARAMANa
aKulak Burun Boğaz ABD, İstanbul Üniversitesi Cerrahpaşa Tıp Fakültesi İSTANBUL Xerostomia, known as salivary secretion of less than 0.2 ml/min, may present as a side effect of a serious disease or some medications. In xerostomia, seen frequently in the elderly, oral mucosa is significantly dry, sticky and seriously hyperemic and atrophic. A detailed history and a careful physical examination are important in terms of etiology. Since the salivary secretion decreases, oral flora changes. Oral mucosa may rapidly be infected. So, acute stomatitis and oral candidiasis are frequently encountered. Dental caries and periodontitis are also frequently seen in patiens with xerostomia. Keywords: Salivary glands, xerostomiaTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(36):45-48
