Thyroid nodules are very common clinical entities. In adults, clinically palpable thyroid nodules are present in 5 to 10% of population and increase with age. The clinical importance of thyroid nodules rests with the need to exclude thyroid cancer that occurs in 5-10% depending on age, gender, radiation exposure history, family history, and other factors. Over the last decade, there have been many advances in diagnosis and therapy of thyroid nodules. The otolaryngologist/head and neck surgeon encounters thyroid nodules commonly in practice, and understanding of the diagnostic workup options is important.
