External Branch Of Superior Laryngeal Nerve During Thyroid Surgery
Dr. Lütfi Barlas AYDOĞAN,a Dr. Özgür SÜRMELİOĞLUa
aKBB ABD, Çukurova Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ADANA Injury of the superior laryngeal nerve, during the thyroid surgery is a neglected complication. Identification of the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve, in various reports is between 33-93%, and risk of the nerve injury is between 0.3-58%. The incidence of injury of external branch of superior larygeal nerve is 0.3-58%. The diagnosis of the paralysis of this nerve is difficult to establish but should be suspected when there is voice fatigue, slight hoarseness and a decrease in voice volume following thyroidectomy since the nerve is under risk while ligating the upper pole vessels of the thyroid. Electromyography seems to offer a gold standard of diagnosing external branch of superior larygeal nerve dysfunction and voice therapy offers the best treatment alternative. To know the location and variations of the nerve will be helpful to prevent injury of the nerve during the dissection of the superior thyroid pole. Keywords: Thyroidectomy, superior laryngeal nerve, complicationTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(49):66-71
