Preservation Of Parathyroid Glands In Thyroid Surgery
Dr. İsmet ASLANa
aKBB ABD, İstanbul Üniversitesi İstanbul Tıp Fakültesi, İSTANBUL Thyroid surgery is currently one of the most commonly performed surgeries. Naturally, the complication rate of so frequently performed surgery is also high. Although the complication of thyroid surgery most feared by the surgeons is the paralysis of the recurrent laryngeal nerve, it is the transient or permenant hypocalcemia due to hypoparathyroidism most feared by the internists. Besides being a life threatening complication, fine tuning of appropriate serum levels of calcium is very difficult, especially when it is needed lifelong. The best treatment of a complication is to avoid it. In this article approach to parathyroid glands is described with special emphasis on the embryologic and anatomic basis. What to do when faced with this complication is explained in details. Keywords: Thyroidectomy, parathyroid gland, hypocalcemiaTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(49):72-78
