Video Assisted Minimal Invasive Thyroidectomy: Technique And Patient Selection

Video assisted minimally invasive thyrodectomy has been used for a long time as it offers a shorter hospitalization time and better cosmetic results. This technique, that was described by Miccoli, enables to perform surgery through an incision smaller than 1.5 cm. In the article technique and patient selection criteria’s for video assisted minimally invasive thyrodectomy will be discussed. Sixteen female, 5 male patients had undergone total lobo-isthmectomy or bilaterally total thyroidectomy by video assisted minimally invasive thyrodectomy technique between November 2005 and August 2007. Eighteen patients had undergone surgery for multinodular goutier and 3 for papillary thyroid carcinoma. None of the patients had hypoparathyroidizm or inferior or superior nerve palsy.
